On 10/18/2017 during the varsity game vs. Northwest Catholic at Cottone, we will be honoring the life of the former WHS FH goalie, Vanessa Carbone, who passed away very suddenly last December due to an acute illness. Vanessa was so loved by all who knew her and a joy to watch play in the goal. She brought a positive energy to the program.
As part of this event, we will be holding a bake/food/water sale. The 5/6th grade youth team will be playing at half time- so there should be a good crowd. The concession stand will be open and the money raised will go directly to Cherish the Children, a local charity. Cherish the Children gives 100% of their funds directly to Connecticut families who similar to Vanessa, face a medical crisis at a young age.
We will officially retire her jersey, #99 and give it to her father, Matt Carbone at the end of the varsity game. Coach Bobbi Moran and her daughter, founder, and owner of International Field Hockey Camp, who knew and coached Vanessa for many years at the camp, will be speaking, a few of us will be sharing some thoughts and we are asking everyone to wear purple ribbons in their hair because this was her favorite color.
Cherish the Children Foundation, a 501(C)(3) has been improving the lives of children for more than 25 years. Working initially under the names of Carbone Family Foundation and Carbone Charities, Inc., the Carbone family began its charitable giving initiatives in 1989. The original beneficiary was Newington Children's Hospital, predecessor to Connecticut Children's Medical Center.
In 2002, the Foundation reorganized under a new volunteer board of directors and changed its name to Cherish the Children Foundation to better reflect our vision of being a resource to families who have nowhere else to turn.
With the support of individuals and businesses, the Foundation assists children in our community who's needs are not being met by traditional sources of funding or support. We may fill a special medical need or assist a family caring for a terminally ill child. The needs are diverse and with your help- together, we are improving the quality of children's lives, one child at a time.
